The second workshop in the formation program teaches discerners how to pray with Scripture through lectio divina. Prior to talking with you, your discerner will send you a copy of their task responses and you will be able to view the questions they are answering. If you would like to view the videos they watched, you can access the full discerner workshops by selecting the “Vocations Outreach Discerner Formation” track on your Catechetical Institute dashboard.

Workshop Overview

The main steps of lectio divina are presented as follows:

  1. Reading the passage out loud

  2. Reading it again (silently) and summarizing it

  3. Picking a person from the passage and answering questions

  4. Reading the passage a third time and spending some quiet time with God

Program participants will be practicing praying in this way with a variety of Scripture passages, all of which deal with topics like trust and faith.

Suggested Questions

These questions are meant to be a resource, but don’t feel limited to what is listed here. Always feel free to bring up additional questions or highlight different task responses. Discerners will also have a list of suggested questions to ask you.

  • Had you ever tried lectio divina before this workshop? If not, what was it like for you to try praying in this way?

  • Did you have a favorite passage to pray with?

  • Were there any steps in lectio divina that you found more challenging than others?

  • Do you think you’ll continue to pray this way in the future? What might that look like?

  • How are you with trusting God in your life? Do you genuinely believe God wants what is best for you?

  • Are there areas in your life where you feel your trust in God is being tested?

  • Are there ideas of God you believe that prevent you from trusting in Him? When you think of God, how do you imagine Him?

  • Do you understand your vocation more as a gift or something to be earned? How do you think this affects your discernment?
